Caressa & David – Oahu Wedding

The path that brought me to Caressa & David’s wedding exemplifies what I love most about this world, and about what I want to teach my children.

It all started in an ice cream shop.

A few years ago I was in Maui with my kids over Christmas break, and I took them to an ice cream shop just down the block from where we were staying. We’d been a few times before and there is a big chalk wall that the kids love to draw on. ¬†When we got there, there was a young man sitting in the corner by the chalk wall, and true to form my daughter marched up to him and struck up a conversation, practically climbing into his lap while she drew on the wall. ¬†It was her corner! She didn’t care who else was in it. ¬†David and I began to chat and I learned that he was in school on Oahu and just over bumming around Maui and exploring, he was into photography, and loved adventures! ¬†We exchanged social media info and went our separate ways.

Fast forward to this June, and while I was in Ireland on a trip I got a text from David asking what I was doing in October. I had seen on snapchat that he had proposed to his girlfriend Caressa, who is from Oahu! And before he even actually asked me to shoot his wedding I said yes.

All because my daughter has a bold spirit and a kind heart, and the joy of reaching out to new people in this world, I traveled to Oahu this October to photograph Caressa & David’s wedding and to meet some amazing people! ¬†This was my first Mormon/LDS wedding – photographs are not allowed in the ceremony, but we had a great celebration after they were sealed.

Anyone who follows my on instagram (@haleyshandrophoto) or Facebook knows of my love affair with Hawaii. It feels like my second home and any chance I can go, I go. This was the most time I had spent on Oahu, and I barely left the North Shore. Morning walks, watching surfers, eating fresh acai bowls, ziplining, and laying on the beach…absolute paradise. ¬†I want to extend a HUGE thank you to my host family for giving me the most amazing little room to stay in while I was there, across from one of the most amazing surf spots in the world. ¬†And of course to Caressa’s family – I felt truly welcome from the moment I accidentally crashed her bridal shower to the day I left. ¬†It was just a fabulous experience. ¬†Now for some photos!

We did a day-before session at the Waimea Valley Garden, finishing up with a sunset shoot on the beach.  The natural beauty of Hawaii is unparalleled.

The ceremony was held at the stunning Laie Temple and Caressa’s family home was decorated beautifully for the reception.
