Not all of us were blessed with legs like Shauna. This month we will be focusing on bridal beauty and a question that is central to many brides — do I need to lose weight before the wedding?

It’s a complicated question, and one that is very personal.  What are some of the options available to Edmonton brides? Today we’re sharing an interview with a real Edmonton bride and her experience getting in shape before her wedding.

First, let me introduce you to Leanne, a bride who chose to see a dietician to help her and her fiance get into shape.

Why did you want to lose weight?

– Both Mike and I decided to see a dietician to help us get in shape for our wedding. We’d kinda let ourselves go a bit in the eating department but we were both still working out/playing sports, but obviously if you’re not eating well the weight doesn’t move!

How much weight did you aim to lose?

– I had about 15 pounds that I wanted to lose for the wedding and had 3.5 months to do it when we started seeing the dietician.

Why did you pick a dietician?

– Mike and I realized that this would probably be the best route for us because we each received personalized plans and we met with her each month to assess and adjust our plan as required based on our progress.  It is also something that is very easy to follow for life because it wasn’t really a diet, just a guideline for eating healthy that we can come back to any time we seem to lose our focus.

How did you find the experience?

We signed up for an entire year so we actually saw her for 8 months after our wedding as well.  It was really great for Mike because he’s never really had to watch what he eats and this was a real eye opener because he learned all about nutrition and counting calories. It was nice for him to see what I’ve had to deal with my whole life!

Did you lose the weight that you wanted?

Yes. It felt like the healthiest way to get in shape for our wedding, and it was something I could keep working with afterwards.

Did your decision affect your dress purchase size?

It didn’t affect my dress size because I actually bought my dress when I was only about 5 pounds heavier than my final wedding weight (I gained 5-10 lbs after buying my dress). And my biggest measurement is my hips and they had to take everything else in anyway.  I’d rather have to have it taken in that not lose enough weight to fit into a smaller size in time for the big day!

Next week we’re going to bring you an interview with Leanne’s nutritionist to get her perspective on bridal nutrition, and mid-month we’ll hear from a personal trainer who can help you get in shape for the big day.
